African Union Chairperson's voice faked by fraudsters using artificial intelligence

Fraudsters have faked the voice of Moussa Faki, the Chairperson of the African Union(AU) Commission, using artificial intelligence and placed video calls to European capitals asking to arrange meetings.

The AU Commission stated the the cyber fraudsters have used fake email addresses under pretense to the AU's deputy chief of staff and asked to arrange calls between international leaders and Mr.Faki.

This was done using deep fake video alterations and the spokesperson for Mr.Faki has tweeted stating that it stands by strict protocol for any high level engagement requests. The aims of the criminals are not clear, but the AU statement has called the fake emails “phishing,” . Their plan may have been to steal digital identities in order access to privileged information.

The Commission has expressed regret over these incidents and emphasized that only official diplomatic channels are used to communicate with foreign governments,  and this is through their embassies in Addis Ababa.
