Extreme heatwave in Malawi: Authorities has spelled caution

Malawi is witnessing an unexpected heatwave, with temperatures going upto almost twice the average for the season. This began on Thursday, making authorities to issue advisories, evacuate school buildings, and adjust timings.

As the heatwave started, people have been advised to take precautions such as not getting exposed to direct sunlight, staying well-hydrated, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine consumption.

Some areas in Malawi have recorded temperatures as high as 43 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday, which is way higher than the seasonal temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. The temperatures had slightly decreased by Monday, yet, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services have issued warnings of an "extended period of hot and uncomfortable weather" throughout October.

Sport players were asked to take regular breaks and keep themselves well-hydrated.This heatwave is due to the climate change, as 2023 has seen record-breaking global temperatures.

Vulnerable groups of the populations like young children and elderly have been asked to take particular care.
