Russia Strengthens Relations with Chad in Line with Strategic African Outreach

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov concluded a significant tour of Africa on Wednesday, June 5, with a visit to N’Djamena, Chad, following stops in Guinea, the Republic of Congo, and Burkina Faso. During his visit to Chad, Lavrov met with his Chadian counterpart, Abderaman Koulamallah, to discuss enhancing bilateral relations.

Central and Western Africa have long been considered France’s sphere of influence. Lavrov emphasized that Russia's strengthening ties with Chad are not aimed at challenging any other nation. “I assure you that our alliance with Chad does not affect our relations with France in any way. France often operates on the principle that nations are either with them or against them,” Lavrov stated.

This year marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between Russia and Chad. Russia's expanding influence in Africa has added complexity to the continent’s geopolitical landscape, with many analysts describing this competition as the “battle for Africa.”

Political scientist Baba Dakono suggests that the security situation in the Sahel region has enabled Russia's involvement in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, and the Central African Republic. “Security issues provide an entry point for Russia in Africa,” he notes. “In Eastern Europe (Ukraine), the West is encroaching on what Russia considers its primary area of influence. Similarly, in the Sahel, Russians are gaining ground in areas traditionally dominated by Western powers.”

Lavrov’s visit to Chad followed Chadian President Mahamat Deby Itno’s visit to Russia last January. During Lavrov’s meeting with President Itno, the two officials discussed potential areas of cooperation to further strengthen bilateral relations.
