Police Deployment in Haiti by Kenya Strengthens Security-Ruto Urges International Support

During his visit to Haiti last Saturday, Kenyan President William Ruto commended the significant progress in strengthening security following the deployment of 382 Kenyan police officers. These officers are part of the UN-authorized Multinational Security Support mission aimed at stabilizing the violence-plagued island.

Speaking at the 79th annual UN General Assembly, Ruto urged the international community to rally behind the mission, emphasizing Kenya’s leading role in combating the gangs that have terrorized Haiti. He noted that Kenyan support for the Haitian National Police has helped pacify cities, secure infrastructure, and liberate communities held hostage by criminal gangs. Kenya has committed to sending more officers, with plans for a 2,500-member multinational force.

However, Haiti still faces challenges in securing funding for the mission. The U.S. is now working to convert the Kenya-led initiative into a UN peacekeeping operation, which would ensure automatic financing. Washington has pledged more than $40 million in additional funding, on top of the $360 million already committed, as Haiti continues to struggle with gang violence that has claimed over 8,000 lives since 2022.
