Toyota's new initiative: Hydrogen-powered vehicle exhibited in South Africa

Toyota exhibited the first hydrogen-powered vehicle in South Africa. This was done in collaboration with Sasol and Air Products.

The potential to use hydrogen-powered vehicles to make it a viable option is under process. There are some hurdles that need to be addressed though.

The production of hydrogen is an energy-intensive process and this is the foremost hurdle. Sasol does have a green plant for the production of hydrogen, by utilizing renewable sources of energy. This is to lessen the emissions.

The distribution of hydrogen is also another factor. Air Products, has an set-up in place for potential future distribution of hydrogen, but building a network of stations for refueling is costly as well as time consuming.

The use of hydrogen fuel is more fitting for commercial vehicles that run long distance. It is relatively cheaper compared to internal combustion engines of the conventional style. Having said this green motors are still expensive.

However, with time and the use of technology, hydrogen-powered vehicles may assist in contributing to a cleaner energy focus in South Africa.
