World Humanitarian Day 2024: The Lead Role of the UAE in Most of the African Crisis
World Humanitarian Day is a moment to honor humanitarians and recognize the vital contributions of countries like the UAE in providing relief to those in need. This year’s focus is on Africa, where many nations face prolonged crises—from conflict to climate-induced disasters—making the continent a priority for humanitarian assistance. The UAE has emerged as a leading global donor, consistently delivering substantial aid across Africa.
Africa has been at the epicenter of numerous humanitarian crises in recent years, with countries like Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Chad grappling with conflict, food insecurity, displacement, and the impacts of climate change. For instance, Sudan’s ongoing conflict has created severe humanitarian challenges, leaving millions displaced and in urgent need of assistance. Somalia, devastated by prolonged drought, suffers one of the world’s worst food crises. The UAE has been at the forefront of responding to these disasters, providing essential food supplies, healthcare, and infrastructure development to alleviate suffering.
As highlighted in the 2020 UAE Foreign Aid Report, the UAE disbursed over AED 10.24 billion (USD 2.79 billion) in foreign aid worldwide, with a significant portion directed to African countries. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the UAE has maintained its strong commitment to supporting nations in crisis, disbursing close to AED 4.81 billion to 44 African countries. This aid has been crucial in supporting infrastructure and health services in Sudan, addressing food security and healthcare needs in Somalia, and providing emergency relief in Ethiopia and Chad. As we observe World Humanitarian Day 2024, the UAE's ongoing efforts underscore the importance of global cooperation in addressing the root causes of conflict and ensuring lasting peace and stability in Africa.
