UN General Assembly Adopts “Pact for the Future” to Tackle Global Challenges

The United Nations General Assembly has approved a groundbreaking "Pact for the Future," a comprehensive 42-page roadmap aimed at uniting a divided world to tackle major global challenges, including climate change, artificial intelligence, conflicts, inequality, and poverty. The pact calls for action from the leaders of all 193 UN member states, urging them to improve the lives of over 8 billion people globally. UN Secretary-General António Guterres introduced the pact during the "Summit of the Future," making a powerful plea for strengthened multilateralism.

The pact outlines 56 specific actions focused on key issues such as poverty eradication, climate action, gender equality, and peace promotion. It also calls for much-needed reform of the UN Security Council to make it more representative, particularly addressing the lack of permanent African, Asia-Pacific, and Latin American seats. Additionally, it marks the first multilateral commitment to nuclear disarmament in over a decade and includes provisions to prevent an arms race in space and limit lethal autonomous weapons.

Alongside the pact, two important annexes were adopted: the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations. The Global Digital Compact establishes a framework for governing artificial intelligence, while the Declaration emphasizes engaging youth in global decision-making processes. The pact also highlights the importance of eliminating barriers to women’s rights and addressing the global backlash against reproductive rights, pushing for immediate, coordinated action on these crucial fronts.
