Key highlights from inaugural EU-GCC Summit in Brussels

The Belgian capital, Brussels, hosted the first-ever EU-GCC Summit on October 16, under the theme "Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity." European Council President Charles Michel and Qatar's Emir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, co-chaired the event. The summit marked an important step in strengthening ties between the European Union and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations.

Key outcomes from the inaugural summit included commitments to promote global and regional security, prevent conflicts, and resolve crises through dialogue and coordination. Both regions emphasized the importance of fostering a strategic trade and investment partnership, with the EU already serving as the GCC’s second-largest trade partner. They pledged to further enhance cooperation in energy, addressing climate change, and biodiversity loss, while striving for positive outcomes at the upcoming COP29 climate conference in Baku.

In addition, the EU and GCC leaders agreed to explore collaboration in the digital economy, telecommunications, advanced technologies, and space. They also discussed the potential for visa-free travel arrangements to strengthen people-to-people connections and enhance global stability. The next EU-GCC Summit is scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia in 2026, continuing the dialogue established by their 1989 cooperation agreement.
