South Africa’s ‘High Priest’ Ray McCauley Passes Away at 75
Ray McCauley, the renowned founder of Rhema Bible Church, passed away peacefully at home late Tuesday, surrounded by loved ones, the church announced. Known for his powerful oratory and influence, McCauley established the evangelist-style Rhema Bible Church in 1979, which has since grown to over 45,000 members, making it one of South Africa’s most prominent churches. Although he stepped down as head pastor in 2022, McCauley continued preaching until his final days.
Tributes poured in after his passing, reflecting on both his significant impact and the controversies surrounding him. While admired by many, McCauley’s ties to political figures, particularly his support for former President Jacob Zuma, sparked debates. He was also known for his lavish lifestyle, prompting criticism as a proponent of the prosperity gospel. Despite these controversies, his influence was undeniable, with high-profile figures attending his church, and his role on the National Interfaith Leaders Council added to his prominence.
President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his deep condolences, acknowledging McCauley’s remarkable leadership and lasting legacy. Other notable figures, like former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, shared heartfelt tributes, celebrating his pioneering spirit in inclusive worship. McCauley’s legacy, though complex, leaves an indelible mark on South Africa’s religious and social landscape.
