UAE Entry into BRICS Increases its Diplomatic and Economic Options
The United Arab Emirates has officially become a member of the BRICS group, following the ratification of its application by the five founding nations: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The announcement was made during the 15th BRICS Summit, held in Johannesburg from August 22–24, where leaders of the member countries met to discuss global economic cooperation.
The UAE’s inclusion in BRICS reflects its strong commitment to multilateralism and constructive international dialogue, especially among developing and emerging economies. The UAE has long championed global peace, security, and sustainable development, and this membership further strengthens its role in advancing these values. The UAE had previously participated in the ‘Friends of BRICS’ forum and became a member of the BRICS New Development Bank in 2021, which focuses on infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets.
His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed gratitude to the founding BRICS members for welcoming the UAE, noting the country’s dedication to fostering strategic and economic partnerships. Other UAE leaders, including His Excellency Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan and Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, reiterated the importance of the UAE’s role in promoting multilateral cooperation to achieve global peace, prosperity, and sustainable development. The UAE continues to emphasize the value of international collaboration as it prepares to host the COP28 climate conference later this year.
