Counter-Terror Victory: Nigerian Troops Kill 80 Jihadists in Borno Raid

A Nigerian police truck stands at the deserted Maiduguri Monday Market, the morning after multiple explosions struck the north-eastern city of Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, on 17th March, 2026.

In my opinion, the recent "offensive-defensive" operation by the Nigerian military in the Lake Chad Basin is a masterclass in modern counter-insurgency. On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the Nigerian Army confirmed that at least 80 militants from Boko Haram and ISWAP were neutralized during a failed overnight assault on a military base in Mallam Fatori.

This massive blow to the terror groups comes as a much-needed victory following a series of tragic suicide bombings in Maidugu

Borno State, Nigeria, on 17th March, 2026.

How did the military neutralize 80 militants in a single night?

I believe the key to this success was a combination of high-level intelligence and international cooperation. The militants launched a coordinated, five-pronged attack using ground fighters and multiple armed drones. However, according to The Nation, troops of Operation Hadin Kai anticipated the move. Backed by precision strikes from the Nigerian Air Force and allied Nigerien air assets, the military decimated the attackers, including three high-profile commanders: Abdulrahman Gobara, Mallam Ba Yuram, and Abou Ayyuba.

Is the tide turning against the insurgency in 2026?

While the Global Terrorism Index recently ranked Nigeria fourth globally for terror-related deaths, this operation shows that the military's command structure is becoming more proactive. In my view, the deployment of 200 U.S. troops for technical support is starting to pay dividends in high-tech battlespace awareness.

FAQs

Who were the key commanders killed in the raid? The military identified the fallen leaders as Abdulrahman Gobara, Mallam Ba Yuram, and Abou Ayyuba. Their elimination is expected to cause significant disruption to the insurgents' operational capacity in the Abadam axis.

What weapons were recovered from the scene? Troops recovered a massive cache, including RPG launchers, machine guns, anti-aircraft weaponry, and components of armed drones. In my opinion, the use of drones by militants highlights a dangerous technological escalation that the army is now successfully countering.
