Boakai's Attempt to Remove President Weah in Liberia

On Sunday, a large number of people gathered in Liberia's capital city of Monrovia. They went to see Joseph Boakai's launch of his campaign for the upcoming elections in October. These elections will determine whether George Weah, a former football player and current President, is still popular with the people following his first term as President, which was marked by problems.

Boakai, a 78-year-old man known for being quiet, was backed by many people who danced, waved flags, and wanted things to change despite the rain.

Weah has lost the support of certain people who once supported him on. They believe that he did not improve their lives or remove corruption in Liberia. Liberia is a poor country in West Africa that had a civil war, a serious Ebola outbreak, and reduced costs for their products this century.

Martha Gould, a businesswoman, said, "We thought he (Weah) was going to bring the change he promised, but nothing happened." I truly hope things improve.

Weah was elected president despite having no prior political experience because many people believed he could improve things. He was a renowned soccer player once.

Weah's chief of staff Nathaniel McGill was amongst three Liberian officials accused by the US government of being dishonest and stealing state funds in December 2018. They contend that they did nothing illegal even though Weah's firing of them.

A Liberian court ordered the arrest of over thirty former central bank employees in 2018 after 10 million dollars went missing.

Liberia made a mistake in how they managed to keep track of how much fuel they had in 2020, which resulted in a problem with gasoline. People were concerned about this at gas stations.

However, it's still unclear if Boakai and his Unity Party will be able to influence the outcome of the vote. According to the World Bank, Weah continues to get wide support, and mining and agriculture played a role in the nation's 5% economic growth in 2018.
