Rwanda To Host Africa’s First AI Summit In 2024 For African Businesses

In 2024, Rwanda will host a significant AI summit, the first of its kind in Africa, organized by Rwanda’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) in collaboration with the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The summit aims to unite African nations and their industries to explore AI opportunities, challenges, and strategies. The objective is to formulate an AI implementation roadmap tailored for Africa.

During the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire, highlighted the potential role of Africa's youth in the global AI landscape and in boosting their economies.

Under the leadership of President Paul Kagame, Rwanda is an active member of the AI Governance Alliance at the WEF, committed to influencing the trajectory of AI development rather than merely adapting to it.

The event, titled ‘AI and Africa’s Demographic Dividend: Reimagining Economic Opportunities for Africa’s Workforce,’ is set to convene leaders from government, business, academia, and civil society.

With a $1.5 billion investment from Vodafone and Microsoft to advance AI and cloud technologies in Africa, the summit will concentrate on leveraging AI for workforce development and tackling issues of access and inclusion.

The AI Governance Alliance (AIGA) strives to democratize AI accessibility, and the summit is a step towards this objective. It will bring together influential figures from around the globe, particularly from underrepresented regions.

Established in 2020, C4IR Rwanda is the continent's sole center dedicated to AI and data governance. The center played a pivotal role in developing Rwanda's National AI Policy in 2023. The upcoming summit aims to demonstrate AI's potential in addressing specific African challenges.

Crystal Rugege, Managing Director of C4IR Rwanda, emphasized the significance of the event in discussing AI within the African context, viewing it as an opportunity for Africa to harness AI for growth and equitable benefit distribution.

The summit will also highlight the Kigali International Financial Center, showcasing how AI can be employed to address unique African challenges and opportunities, with a focus on access and inclusion.
