Chad Swears in President Mahamat Deby Itno Amid Contentious Elections
N'Djamena, Chad — Following the elections on May 6, which marked the end of three years of military rule, Chad has inaugurated Mahamat Deby Itno as its president. The election, however, remains controversial, with significant disagreements regarding its validity.
Mahamat Deby Itno, the son of the late Idriss Deby Itno, assumed power after his father's assassination in 2021 during combat with rebels, ending a thirty-year rule. The elections, postponed multiple times, were intended to restore democratic governance in the country.
Just a day before the inauguration, Deby's primary opponent, Succès Masra, resigned from his position as prime minister. Masra, a longtime critic of Deby's extended rule, had previously left Chad in 2022 due to his involvement in anti-government protests but returned last year to serve as prime minister. Masra challenged the election results, claiming victory, but his appeal was rejected.
The election process faced heavy scrutiny, particularly after Chad barred 2,900 EU-trained monitors from overseeing the polls. Despite these irregularities, Western leaders, including those from the United States, France, and the UK, have endorsed Deby Itno. They view Chad as a crucial ally in the increasingly unstable Sahel region, which has seen numerous military coups in neighboring countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
In his inaugural speech, Deby Itno pledged to address key issues such as healthcare, water access, education, and industry. "I understand your need for change, as expressed here. Let each of us individually and together contribute to bring about the transformation we all aspire, wish for, and expect," he stated.
With a population of around 18 million and a significant oil exporter, Chad has struggled for a democratic transition since gaining independence from French colonial rule in 1960. Despite ongoing debates, the current political shift is seen as a pivotal moment for the nation.
