UAE's Humanitarian Role in Sudan Recognized by UN

Of its $100 million pledge announced at the Paris International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighbouring Countries in April 2024, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has allocated $70 million. This significant contribution underscores the UAE's commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The funds will be distributed to key UN agencies and humanitarian organizations, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The aid is intended to meet Sudan's urgent needs, including food and health services, livelihood support, emergency housing, and protection for women. This comprehensive support package aims to prevent starvation and further deterioration of humanitarian conditions in the region. The UAE's broader plan is to provide holistic assistance to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict.

Her Excellency Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasized the country's unwavering support for the Sudanese people. She highlighted the UAE's establishment of an air bridge to deliver aid to Sudan and neighboring Chad, alongside the financial support. This initiative has facilitated the transportation of 9,500 tons of food and medical supplies via 148 relief planes and a ship carrying about 1,000 tons of essential relief supplies. The UAE has also sent food aid to Sudanese refugees in South Sudan and supported camps for displaced persons in Chad.

International officials have widely recognized the UAE's humanitarian contributions. Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, expressed profound gratitude for the UAE's support, noting that the $70 million allocation would significantly enhance lifesaving assistance for families and communities affected by Sudan's unprecedented humanitarian crisis. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain also praised the UAE's vital role in providing much-needed aid to vulnerable populations.

The UAE's commitment to Sudan extends beyond immediate relief. The nation has established two field hospitals in the Chadian cities of Amdjarass and Abéché, providing medical care to Sudanese refugees and other needy individuals. Since its inception, the Amdjarass Hospital alone has treated 29,378 patients.

Reaffirming its call for peace, the UAE has advocated for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the Sudanese conflict. The UAE supports a return to the democratic process, aiming to build a government that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people for progress and prosperity. Through these initiatives, the UAE continues to play a crucial role in promoting stability and humanitarian aid in the region.
