UAE commits $30m to support Ghana’s climate, biodiversity initiatives

The UAE and the Republic of Ghana have announced a US$30 million partnership to support nature-based community development and climate solutions. The collaboration, which outlines key investment areas such as biodiversity corridors, reforestation, and agroecology, aims to address climate change, enhance biodiversity, and promote community development, with a particular focus on gender equality and youth.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Shamsi, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, and Samuel A. Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. The partnership falls under Ghana’s Resilient Ghana nature-climate strategy and includes metrics for monitoring and verifying progress, utilizing Ghana’s pioneering REDD+ process.

Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28, praised the partnership as a model for coordinating nature and climate actions, further aligning with the UAE Consensus signed at COP28 to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030. This partnership underscores both nations’ commitment to achieving climate goals and sustainable development.
