UAE Re-echoes Support for Sudan Peace Moves as Humanitarian Situation Deteriorates

Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote to The Economist emphasizing the UAE’s steadfast commitment to the Sudanese peace process. The letter highlighted the UAE’s active involvement in recent peace talks in Switzerland, where efforts were concentrated on establishing humanitarian aid routes and enhancing civilian protection.

As the humanitarian crisis in Sudan deteriorates, the UAE continues to advocate for heightened diplomatic engagement, with a focus on safeguarding vulnerable groups, particularly women and children. HE Nusseibeh reiterated the UAE’s dedication to civilian protection, including shielding them from sexual violence, and emphasized the importance of integrating Sudanese women’s perspectives in peacebuilding efforts.

Addressing accusations, HE Nusseibeh clarified, “The UAE is not providing weapons or supporting any warring faction in Sudan.” Instead, the UAE’s involvement centers on facilitating peaceful negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive nationwide ceasefire. The UAE’s approach is grounded in the belief that peace is attainable only through negotiated settlements that restore Sudan to a civilian-led government, supported by humanitarian aid and international cooperation.

HE Nusseibeh’s letter called for urgent, unified international action to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of Sudanese civilians. The UAE has been a key advocate of the Jeddah Declaration, which prioritizes a ceasefire and humanitarian access, underscoring the UAE’s constructive role in peacebuilding.

The UAE urged the international community to respond swiftly: “This humanitarian crisis in Sudan is intolerable.” HE Nusseibeh stressed the need for global efforts to focus on ending hostilities, thereby advancing the peace process toward a stable and peaceful Sudan.

The UAE remains resolute in its commitment to protecting Sudanese civilians, particularly women and children, ensuring that their plight does not go unnoticed by the world. The pursuit of peace and the protection of vulnerable populations remain central to the UAE’s efforts in Sudan.
