In a significant escalation of counter-terrorism operations, the Nigeria Defence Headquarters and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) have successfully executed a high-stakes joint operation in the Metele area of Borno State. President Bola Tinubu and U.S. officials confirmed that the strike effectively dismantled a major operational hub, killing al-Minuki along with several of his top lieutenants.

The Global Significance of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki

Al-Minuki was identified as the most active terrorist in the world prior to his death, responsible for directing ISIS's global media, financial operations, and weapons manufacturing including the development of explosives and drones. His removal represents the "single most consequential counter-terrorism outcome" in recent months for the Operation Hadin Kai theater. The operation highlights the deepened bilateral partnership between Nigeria and the U.S., which has intensified since late 2025 to combat foreign-backed extremist organizations.
