West Africa Is Drowning. Scientists Say Climate Change Made It Worse.

Between June 20 and 22, 2026, more than 140 millimetres of rain fell in parts of Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo, and Nigeria within a single 24-hour period overwhelming drainage systems, submerging roads, and triggering flash floods from Lagos to Monrovia. At least 34 people died in Ghana, where June rainfall reached its highest level since 1995, while Côte d'Ivoire recorded 59 deaths since the rainy season began in May. In Accra, emergency teams rescued more than 400 people in a single day as floodwaters entered homes across the capital.

What the Science Found

A World Weather Attribution study published in July 2026 found that human-induced climate change significantly increased the likelihood and intensity of the extreme rainfall event that triggered the June flooding across the Gulf of Guinea coast. The research, conducted by scientists from Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom, attributed the disaster to the combination of a warming atmosphere holding more moisture and rapid urbanisation that has stripped the region of natural drainage capacity. Floodplains have been built over. Natural vegetation has been converted to cropland. Informal settlements have expanded into areas with no drainage infrastructure.

Benjamin Sultan, a researcher at the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development, was direct: "These floods will continue to become increasingly frequent and severe as global warming intensifies in the coming years". The rainy season, which typically runs from May through July, is expected to continue producing conditions that could trigger further severe weather events before it ends.

The Urban Dimension

The WWA study identified rapid urbanisation as a critical amplifying factor, noting that the expansion of formal and informal settlements into floodplains and the conversion of natural vegetation to cropland have reduced natural drainage capacity and increased exposure across the densely populated Gulf of Guinea coastal region. Accra, Lagos, and Abidjan are among the fastest-growing cities in Africa. All three sit on coastlines with inadequate drainage systems designed for a climate that no longer exists.

Greenpeace Africa's July 2026 analysis noted that in Accra, Ghana's interior minister admitted the response could have been better and that the forecast is rarely the weak link in these disasters; the response is. Early warning systems issued alerts before the June floods. The infrastructure to act on those alerts was not in place. That is not a climate failure. It is a planning failure and planning is a choice.

A Pattern, Not an Anomaly

The 2026 floods did not arrive without precedent. In 2024, floods across West and Central Africa killed more than 1,500 people and displaced over one million. In 2022, Nigeria alone recorded more than 610 flood deaths. The 2026 event is the latest point on a trend line that has been moving in one direction for years, and the WWA's attribution science has now confirmed that climate change is bending that line steeper with each passing season. Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d'Ivoire are three of West Africa's largest and most economically significant countries. The flood threat they face is not a humanitarian footnote. It is a development emergency.
